Insurance-Dedicated Fund (IDF)

What is an Insurance-Dedicated Fund?

It is similar in many ways to an private investment fund. It may be established directly by either an insurer, a mutual or hedge fund or by a qualified high-net worth investor. Its defining characteristic is that it is only available for use in a tax-compliant, private placement Swiss Annuity or Private Placement Life Insurance policy.

An Insurance-Dedicated Fund is used to hold assets within a Private Placement Life Insurance policy which are typically tax-inefficient and/or require active management. For sophisticated investors, these funds, when properly structured, offer significant advantages which cannot be duplicated anywhere else:

An IDF supports an array of high-return, wealth-creating assets such as hedge funds, private equity or venture capital, which are wholly unavailable through traditional insurance solutions. Other assets which may require active management in their day-to-day operations include commercial real estate, apartment buildings, business interests, etc. Many insurers will accept as an underlying investment almost any asset which can be properly valued.

SwissGuard International’s role in assisting its clients with the creation of an IDF is as an investment-oriented strategy that can dramatically improve the tax efficiency of a client's investment portfolio while providing meaningful tax mitigation strategies upon the investors’ death.

We recognizes that estate planning in the high-net worth market is evolving beyond the traditional role of implementing planning strategies that reduce taxes at death to encompass the broader and more immediate issues of investment and income tax planning.

In summation, the establishment of an Insurance-Dedicated Fund as a personal holding structure exclusively for one’s Swiss Annuity or Life Insurance policy is ideally suited to hold assets which are otherwise tax-inefficient or require active management.
